Why should monuments be removed?

When Lockdown begun and the skies were bluer and the air was fresher we all loved it didn't we?
We said Mother Nature is purging our world and making it a better place to live.
Well the purging isn't limited to just nature. Our minds, hearts and the system must be purged too...That is what's going on now.

Soo many ills in our society have been accepted, ignored and worse are being celebrated. Some people are not even aware of   the existence of the statutes being pulled down, who they were, what they did and what their existence in our public spaces symbolizes. Removing statues is not about destroying history because statues are rarely about preserving history, and more often about memorializing individuals.

Living in a continent where slave traders are celebrated sends a very clear message to me...their actions are being glorified.
How would you feel if Hitler's statue was erected? How different are the actions of these slave traders from that of Hitler?

...Their victims were black... is that why it doesn't matter?

Colston was a particularly vile human being. As deputy governor of the Royal African Company, the most prolific British slave trading organization, Colston was responsible for selling an estimated 84,000 African people like cattle. Of these, 19,000 died in slave ships journeying from West Africa to the Americas via the infamous Middle Passage. Why should he be memorialized???

King Leopold II, was responsible for the genocide of an estimated 15 million Congolese colonial subjects and his statue stood tall in Belgium for decades. Again why is he being remembered so fondly? And that's just two examples.

Toppling down statues that made a statement about how society perceives the evil that these men did is not an attack on history, but a plea to correct how we write it. It’s a cry from people who have had no choice but to co-exist with the painful reminders of the subjugation of their race!
Please excuse me all the talk about forgetting the past and focusing on the future because that's what this revolution is about!

Let Germany's post-war de-Nazification offer a way forward for us all.
